Hillcrest Farm - where disc golf legends are made.
They call PEI ‘disc golf island’ for a reason, it is loaded with some of the nicest courses in the country. Of all the super good choices, one stands above the rest for me.
It doesn’t matter if it is your first time on the course or you are a national champ, Hillcrest Farm in Bonshaw is the place to be. We have played all over as a family, but Hillcrest just feels different. Maybe it’s because we are on PEI and everything just feels better there, but Hillcrest is special. My Dad introduced me to disc golf many years ago, but this is where i truly fell in love with the sport.
Just 15-20 minutes from the city (I highly recommend to stop and grab a little fuel from BOOMBurger at the Milky Way shops), and you are driving up the dirt road to the parking lot at the course. There is a little pro shop there and you can even rent discs if you need them or forgot to travel with them. I know we always keep extra sets at the cottages for people if they need them too. Make sure you pay the $10 fee per person. It is on an honour system but that is what helps them pay for the maintenance, so please make sure to do that. You can e-transfer or cash. Hurricane Fiona did a lot of damage to the course and it was closed for a long time, so please support all the do.
When you are just learning you can play the red tees and it is super playable. You can still spend some time looking for your disc, but a lot of the real tough and longer tee shots are from the blue tees. I recommend this to start and it is still super challenging. I still play the reds every time here, the blues are pretty tough and really long.
The course is a long one, and even though most of the course is in the shade of the trees, make sure you bring something good to drink. I recommend a towel too as, unfortunately, my discs tend to find water from time to time here. But don’t be scared by the legacy of this amazing place, any skill level can still play and enjoy it. It makes for a great family outing on a hot summer day.
It usually isn’t too busy during the week, but can get a little more packed in the summer weekends and especially when there aare tournaments here. In 2022 we got to play with some dudes playing in the Canadian Championships there, that was pretty sweet.
After your round, make sure everyone paid up and crack a cold juice box in the parking lot and talk about how you will get your revenge next time. Because you will be back!
