The East Coast road trip is back.
We knew it was hapening, but we had to dive into some data to find out for sure. It’s official, the East Coast family road trip is back.
In the post-covid era of travel, there has been a remarkable resurgence in the popularity of family road trips. I would say we see about 2/3rd’s of our summer guests now arriving in their own vehicles. Maybe its the nostalgia of summer road trips every summer with my Dad as a kid, but it’s a throwback to a simpler time. One where conversation ruled the road and the journey was actually part of the vacation. Whatever the reason, I find it completely fascinating to have that world returned to me.
I spend a lot of time talking to our guests (maybe too much) and trying to learn a little about their lives and why they chose Atlantic Canada for their family vacation. More and more the conversation turns to their choice of driving out from Ontario, Quebec or the Eastern US. I always make it a point to find out the reasons why they chose to take the long road. In today’s world of instant action and short attention spans, it is the more challenging way to get here. But they are doing and these are the most common answers I get as to why:
cost of living increases, driving the whole family in one vehicle vs airfare for the whole gang
the realization that air travel has become a total hassle, especially in high season
the bonds with your kids that can only be made on the road
an opportunity to see more of our beautiful country
lack of rental car availability or the cost of ones that are available
they can bring their dog, bikes, kayaks and unlimited luggage
One of my favourtie things about the travel industry is how they track absolutely everything. They want to know how every decision in the travel world is made. If you know where to look and pay enough money, you can get your hands on some pretty cool data sets and studies. I wanted to see if all of that high-level travel industry research agreed with what were seeing on the ground. As it turns out, we are on to something here.
Here are the travel industry’s top reasons behind the resurgence of family road trips to Atlantic Canada and the statistical evidence that supports this growing trend.
1. A yearning for lost connections:
In an era dominated by technology and screens, families are increasingly recognizing the importance of genuine connections and shared experiences. Statistics show that more families are opting for road trips as a means of reconnecting with each other while exploring the world in a throwback manner.
According to a recent survey conducted by travel agencies, 72% of respondents stated that spending quality time with family was their primary motivation for choosing a road trip to Atlantic Canada. It appears that those endless epic landscapes and all of the charming little seaside towns provide the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories and strengthening family bonds.
Sorry to break it to you, but quality time with mom and dad is back, kids.
2. Safety and flexibility:
The uncertainties brought about by global events have led many families to prioritize safety and flexibility in their travel plans. The flexibility of a road trip allows families to adjust their itineraries on the go, responding to changing circumstances and ensuring a stress-free vacation experience.
Recent data from travel agencies and online booking platforms indicate a significant increase in the number of families choosing road trips over other forms of travel, with a notable 35% surge in road trip bookings to Atlantic Canada in the past year alone.
An interesting shift that reflects a growing preference for travel options that offer greater control and adaptability.
3. The Natural World & Outdoor Adventure:
Atlantic Canada is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, from the rugged coastlines to the picturesque landscapes and farmlands. Families are increasingly drawn to the region's abundance of outdoor activities, like world-class hiking, sea and inland paddling, and the abundant wildlife watching.
Statistics from tourism boards reveal a 25% increase in the number of families choosing Atlantic Canada as their preferred destination for outdoor adventures. The lure of unspoiled nature, less people and the opportunity to get outdoors with your own gear have all become driving factors in the resurgence of the ol’ East Coast road trip.
4. The Cultural Riches:
Atlantic Canada's vibrant cultural scene is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered by curious travellers. The region boasts such a rich history, diverse traditions, and a welcoming spirit that visitors never forget. Families are increasingly seeking out destinations that offer not only natural beauty but also a chance to immerse themselves in local cultures.
Survey data from cultural organizations and tourism boards highlight a 30% increase in family travel to Atlantic Canada for cultural experiences. From exploring centuries old historical sites to spoiling yourself in that famous East Coast cuisine, families are finding a ton of joy in the region's cultural tapestry.
So ….
I guess what we have been seeing is only partially supported by the tourism industry’s studies, but the data does back up our theory that the East Coast road trip is back. A 35% increase in just one year tells us everything that we thought was happening, is happening. When it comes to financial constraints, lack of rental cars etc - maybe these are truly only thoughts conveyed in person and not generic traveller polls?
Whatever your reasons might be, plan to pack up the car and head out, everybody’s doing it. Statistically speaking.
