A PEI for all seasons - Spring

This is an easy story to tell. Often overlooked as a time to escape, I am going to attempt to convince you otherwise here. Personally, I LOVE travelling to PEI in the spring. Everything that makes this place so special is in bloom and the energy of the island is ever-evident and seemingly endless.

So here we go …

As the last traces of winter fade away and nature awakens, spring casts its magical spell on the picturesque landscapes of Prince Edward Island. Famous for its red sand beaches, rolling farmlands, and warm hospitality, PEI transforms into a vibrant and enchanting destination during the spring season. Maybe it is the anticipation of an impending summer filled with guests from all over the globe or maybe I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is an overwhelming sense of renewal on the island during these months.

Here are my big reasons why I can’t get enough of PEI at this time of the year:

  1. The blossoming landscapes:

Spring in PEI is a feast for the eyes as the island bursts into a true kaleidoscope of colour. Those iconic rolling hills, farmlands, and coastal areas come alive with blossoming flowers, including the island's famous lupins (pictured here). The vibrant pinks, purples, and whites create a stunning backdrop for explorers and photographers alike. You have to check out Prince Edward Island National Park at any time of the year, but in spring you will find the dunes and shores adorned with a mixture of wildflowers, making it a perfect spot for a stroll without a destination.

Pro tip - Get off the highway. The small country roads are always lined with the most incredible spring colours. Take the slightly longer, but definitely more scenic route to wherever you are travelling.

  2. Mild Weather and Outdoor Activities:

Spring brings mild coastal temperatures to PEI, making it an ideal time for anything outdoors. Whether you're a nature lover, cyclist, or hiker, the island offers truly unlimited and crowd-free options to explore its beauty. Take a bike ride along the Confederation Trail, hike the scenic trails of Greenwich, or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll through the charming coastal villages. The moderate weather allows you to relish the outdoors without the summer crowds, providing a more intimate experience with the island.

Pro tip - always pack a rain jacket and umbrella just in case. The coastal weather in the spring can change from sun to soaked pretty quickly.

  3. As always, the food:

PEI is renowned for the freshest and tastiest seafood, and spring is the perfect time to savour all of it. Local restaurants always feature a bounty of freshly caught lobster, mussels, and fish. Additionally, the island's farmers' markets showcase a surprising array of spring produce, allowing you to indulge in an always special farm-to-table dining experiences. No lineups and as fresh as it gets, so don't miss out on your chance to taste the flavors of spring on the island.

Pro tip - Check the hours before you go! In preparation for a packed house all summer and the logistical difficulty of seasonal staff, many of the little restaurant gems have much shorter opening hours in the spring. It can actually provide a really unique opportunity to chat with staff, chefs and owners, but make sure to plan ahead to ensure you don’t miss out on all of this magic.

  4. Festivals:

While I am not a huge crowds person, springtime actually allows you explore some really unique culture without all of the people. Now, I am a fan of that! The spring calendar is marked by a variety of festivals and events that celebrate the island's culture and traditions. From the vibrant DiverseCity Multicultural Festival to the lively Jack Frost Children's Winterfest transitioning into spring, there's always something for any age or interest happening on the island. A super unique opportunity to connect with the local community, witness traditional performances, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of PEI.

Pro tip - Just do it! Like I said, I am not a crowds person, but the spring festivals are a totally different experience. The pace and the people are pure perfection.

  5. Experience a different kind of stay:

This is your chance to semi-splurge on your place to stay. Rates are always more favourable during these months (ahem - check our calendars) and you can stay somewhere truly unique and special for a fraction of those peak summer month dollars. PEI has such a cool range of charming accommodations, and this might just be your chance to try something different. Whether you choose to stay in the heart of Charlottetown or opt for one of our peaceful seaside retreats (shameless plug), the eclectic stays on the island are usually more affordable and available on shorter notice in the spring.

Pro tip - Get in touch with us. Often more seasonal stays are not yet open and ready to welcome guests, but we often have a few opportunities in our back pocket that we could potentially work something out for you.

Travelling to Prince Edward Island in the spring unveils a true tapestry of natural beauty, outdoor adventures, culinary delights, and cultural experiences. As the island emerges from its winter slumber, springtime visitors are treated to a unique and enchanting perspective of PEI that captures the essence of this idyllic little island.

Trust me on this one, get ready to pack your bags and experience something very different than the PEI we all think of. There is a real purity to this time of the year.

Happy travels, friends!
